Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has reiterated his commitment not to abuse religion in politics. He said that religion should not be used for political purposes in running the state, but the main goal of the government is to ensure equal rights and security for the people of all faiths.
He said this in a written statement after exchanging greetings with Buddhist leaders at the Bangladesh Secretariat on Thursday (April 30th). The prime minister’s deputy press secretary Sujaddoula Sujan Mahmud confirmed this to Prothom Alo.
The Prime Minister said that every religion in the world teaches human welfare and attaches importance to the moral development of the people. Referring to the example of the Panchashil principle of Gautama Buddha, the promoter of Buddhism, he said that directives such as abstaining from murder, theft, lies, adultery and drugs are not only important in religious but also in social life. By following these principles, it is possible to build a human and tolerant society.
He said that in addition to state laws, it will be easier for the citizens to establish peace and harmony in the society if they follow their own religious discipline. The government’s goal is to ensure an environment where everyone, regardless of party, opinion, religion and creed, can live safely and independently.
Regarding secularism, the prime minister said, “The government believes in the principle of “religion is for everyone”. The government is committed to ensuring equal rights for all Bengalis, non-Bengalis, believers and unbelieving citizens.
He reminded that there was no distinction between religion or faith during the Liberation War; everyone fought together and achieved independence. From that consciousness, the work of creating a non-discriminatory and inclusive state is going on.
Highlighting the philosophy of Bangladeshi nationalism, the prime minister said this is the idea that it is capable of ensuring the coexistence of all religions and ethnic groups in the country. He urged all to remove the concept of minorities and become equal citizens.
