Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has ordered the immediate rehabilitation of the hawkers who were evicted from the streets of the capital. The concerned authorities have been directed to take necessary steps in this regard.
He said this at a meeting held at the Prime Minister’s Office in Tejgaon on Saturday. Senior officials of the Local Government Division, Dhaka North City Corporation, Dhaka South City Corporation, Capital Development Authority and Dhaka Metropolitan Police were present at the meeting.
During the meeting, the prime minister directed the concerned ministries and agencies to set up alternative places quickly. He said the evicted hawkers should be resettled in places where they can conduct business with ease and enthusiasm.
Recently, hundreds of shops were evicted in the capital’s Mirpur-1, Motijheel, Baitul Mukarram, Paltan and Gulistan and other areas.
At the meeting, it was decided that the government would allocate alternative spaces for the evicted hawkers. At the same time, their identity card will be given through registration so that the hawker activities can be carried out in an orderly manner.
The meeting also discussed the issue of traffic congestion. The Prime Minister directed the concerned to take necessary steps to reduce traffic congestion on the roads during the start of classes of educational institutions and during the holidays. He said that uncontrolled car parking in front of educational institutions causes traffic congestion in many cases. To solve this problem, the educational institution can be considered using a part of its own field as a parking lot.
Local government division secretary Shahidul Hasan, RAJUK chairman Reazul Islam, Dhaka South City Corporation administrator Abdus Salam, Dhaka North City Corporation administrator Shafiqul Islam Khan, acting commissioner of DMP Md. Sarwar and DIG (Traffic) Anisur Rahman were present.
