Amid the tense situation in the Middle East, US President Donald Trump has announced an extension of the ongoing ceasefire with Iran . However, he made it clear that the blockade on the country’s key ports will remain in place until Iran offers formal talks.
According to international news agency Reuters , the decision was taken at the request of Pakistani mediators. Diplomatic sources say that Pakistan is playing an active role in easing regional tensions and is trying to pave the way for new dialogue.
However, Iran is not viewing Washington’s move positively . Mahdi Mohammadi, an advisor to the country’s parliament speaker , commented that the announcement of an extension of the ceasefire is not in line with reality.
Meanwhile, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi called the blockade a direct “act of war.” He said the port blockade was against the principles of the ceasefire and Tehran was ready to confront such pressure.
Amidst this uncertainty, a possible second round of talks in Islamabad has also become uncertain. The US Vice President’s scheduled visit has been postponed, diplomatic sources said.
Analysts say that while the announcement of an extension of the ceasefire may bring temporary relief, the continued blockade and mutual distrust could further complicate the situation. As a result, effective and coordinated diplomatic efforts are now urgently needed to find a lasting solution.
