In a speech in the parliament, Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed claimed that the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) was taken under control by abusing power in the past.
At the same time, he stressed the need for running the board in a professional structure by keeping it free from political influence.
Taking part in the discussion in the parliament session on Wednesday, he said a “illegal and affected” structure of the previous period has been dismantled and efforts are being made to build an international standard cricket administration under the new management. He also mentioned the involvement of former captain Tamim Iqbal in the current structure.
On the same day, a member of parliament from Comilla-4 constituency, criticised the decision to form an ad hoc committee by dissolving the board of directors of the BCB, the minister said the past irregularities and administrative interference.
The home minister said the influence of the sports administration at the time was influenced to the structure of the district level and attempts were made to conduct the board unilaterally, ignoring the court’s directives. Later, the investigation has been reorganised based on the evidence of irregularities, he said.
In addition to the cricket administration, he also highlighted the government’s stance on the July mass uprising, human rights framework and the activities of state institutions. In his speech, no institution will be allowed to be subject to “occupation or irregularities” in the future and accountability will be ensured.
According to analysts, the BCB’s statement on this is not only a political message of the sport administration, but also a political message of reform and control in the broader state structure.
