The Arab League has called an emergency meeting on Iran amid rapidly escalating conflict in the Middle East. The organization’s foreign ministers will discuss the regional situation in a virtual meeting on Sunday.
The emergency meeting was called at the request of Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Oman, Jordan and Egypt, the Arab League’s assistant secretary-general, Hossam Zaki, told AFP. The meeting will be held via video conference.
Diplomatic sources say that concerns are growing in various countries in the Arab world about Iran’s retaliatory attacks following the military operations by Israel and the United States. The talks are being organized with the aim of coordinating the positions of member states on regional security and potential implications.
Earlier, indirect talks between Tehran and Washington on Iran’s nuclear program had been underway for about three weeks since early February. However, those talks ended without any agreement on February 27.
Diplomatic observers believe that the security situation in the Middle East is rapidly becoming more complex in this situation. The emergency meeting is expected to discuss possible diplomatic initiatives to reduce the conflict and the regional security situation.
