US President Donald Trump has congratulated Tarique Rahman on taking office as the Prime Minister of Bangladesh, the Verified X account of the Bangladesh Foreign Ministry said on Thursday.
The ministry statement said that in the congratulatory message, President Trump expressed his hope that the two countries would work together on the basis of mutual respect and common interests. A letter signed by Trump on February 18 was also attached to the post.
In the letter, he congratulated Tarique Rahman on behalf of the American people for his “historic victory” in the election and wished the prime minister a successful term. It said that the Bangladesh-US partnership is founded on mutual respect and the common interest in building an open Indo-Pacific region.
The letter mentioned the recent bilateral trade agreement, which if implemented would boost bilateral trade and benefit workers and farmers in both countries. It also called for regular defense agreements to be concluded, which would give Bangladesh’s military access to advanced US equipment.
