BNP Chairman ** Tarique Rahman ** has been unanimously elected as the leader of the 13th National Parliament and Prime Minister. The decision was taken at a meeting of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party parliamentary party held under his chairmanship after taking oath on Tuesday, the party’s media cell said.
Earlier in the morning, newly elected BNP members of parliament took oath. At 4 pm, Tarique Rahman and the new cabinet members are scheduled to take oath as Prime Minister before President Md. Shahabuddin at the South Plaza of the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban. In the evening, the Cabinet Division will issue the distribution of portfolios and a formal notification.
In the elections held on February 12, the BNP alliance led by Tarique Rahman won 212 seats, securing an absolute majority—the party’s sixth return to power. Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami will be the main opposition party in parliament with 68 seats; Dr. Shafiqur Rahman is set to be their parliamentary leader.
