Bangladesh Mahila Parishad has alleged that misogynistic and rights-reducing propaganda is being spread in the media surrounding the recent High Court verdict on second marriage. In this context, the organization expects a gender-sensitive role of the judiciary in protecting women’s rights and dignity.
In a statement on Tuesday, Mahila Parishad President Dr. Fawzia Moslem and General Secretary Maleka Banu said that the High Court’s ruling on the permission of the Arbitration Council for second marriages while the first marriage is valid is raising concerns about the violation of women’s human rights, which is in no way acceptable.
The statement called for a responsible and sensitive stance from all parties concerned, including the judiciary, demanding that necessary steps be taken to eliminate social, cultural and legal discrimination to protect the honor, dignity and human rights of women.
