Iran has declared three days of national mourning after a series of violent incidents across the country claimed thousands of lives. The government announced the announcement on Sunday evening (January 11) local time. The president and cabinet are observing mourning in memory of the victims, the presidential office said.
The semi-official Tasnim News Agency reported that the state mourning is being observed in memory of those killed in the violence that took place in the context of the resistance movement against the United States and Israel. The official statement alleged that attacks targeting civilians, Basij volunteers and police members were carried out in a barbaric manner similar to that of Daesh, resulting in the deaths of many people.
The statement described the violence as unprecedented and said it was linked to US-backed groups. At the same time, the government reiterated its firm stance on bringing those responsible for the violence to justice and maintaining public order.
The Tasnim report also said that pro-monarchist rioters vandalized public and private establishments, blocked roads, and attacked administrative buildings and police stations in various cities. Many civilians, including members of the security forces, were killed and injured in these incidents.
