LPG traders have called off their announced strike after a meeting with the Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) chairman. The decision was announced after a meeting held at the BERC office on Thursday. As a result, the supply and sale of LPG cylinders across the country resumed from the same day.
President of the LP Gas Traders Cooperative Association, Salim Khan, said that they raised the demand at the meeting that the Consumer Rights Authority’s operations in shops be stopped and the price of a 12-kg LPG cylinder be fixed at Tk 1,500 at the consumer level.
It is worth noting that traders, angered by the nationwide raids and fines on Wednesday night in protest of the LPG crisis and price instability, announced a halt to the supply and sale of cylinders. At the same time, a warning was given to all companies to stop pumping LPG from their plants.
The two sides reached a solution through the meeting in the context of the government’s initiative to re-set VAT and taxes at the import and local production levels and to simplify the process of opening bank loans and LCs for LPG imports.
