Mahdi Hasan, member secretary of the Habiganj district branch of the Students’ Movement Against Discrimination, has been granted bail. Judge Abdul Mannan of the Habiganj Judicial Magistrate’s Court granted his bail on Sunday morning.
According to court sources, Mahdi Hasan was produced in court this morning and granted bail after a hearing on charges of obstructing police work and making threats. The case was filed against him on Saturday night.
Mahdi Hasan was arrested on Saturday evening from Shaistanagar area of Habiganj town under the identity of DB police. Later, SI Zahirul Islam filed a case as the plaintiff, in which Mahdi was named as the main accused and 20 other people as unknown accused.
Mahdi Hasan is a first-year graduate student of Brindavan Government College. Upon news of his arrest, leaders and activists of the anti-discrimination student movement gathered in front of the Habiganj Sadar Model Police Station and protested. The army, RAB and additional police were deployed to control the situation. A movement was also held in Shahbagh in the capital with the same demand.
It is worth noting that last Friday, when a video of Mahdi Hasan’s altercation with the police in an incident at Shayestaganj Police Station went viral on social media, it sparked widespread discussion and criticism.
