Police have arrested Mahdi Hasan, the Habiganj district member secretary of the Student Movement Against Discrimination, for threatening the Habiganj police station OC. The Habiganj Sadar Police Station police arrested him around 7:30 pm on Saturday. The district’s Superintendent of Police Yasmin Khatun confirmed the matter.
Earlier, a video of Mahdi Hasan making threatening remarks during an altercation with the OC at Shayestaganj Police Station sparked widespread criticism after it went viral on social media. In the video, he is seen posing as a leader of the anti-discrimination movement and making threats in reference to violent incidents.
Following the incident, a letter signed by Shahadat Hossain, the office secretary of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, called on Mahdi Hasan to provide a written explanation for his statement, calling it against the organization’s ideology. He was also ordered to refrain from all activities of the organization until further notice.
Police said legal action is underway regarding the incident.
