LONDON — Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg was arrested by British police while taking part in a pro-Palestinian protest in the capital, London, on Tuesday, the UK-based campaign group Defend Our Jury said .
The organization claims that Thunberg was arrested under terrorism laws for carrying a placard expressing solidarity with prisoners associated with Palestine Action. It is worth noting that the British government has declared Palestine Action a banned terrorist organization.
A City of London Police spokesman said two people were initially arrested after red paint was thrown at a building. A 22-year-old woman who was at the scene holding a placard in support of a banned organisation was arrested under section 13 of the Terrorism Act 2000 shortly after.
Defend Our Jury said they targeted the building because it was used by an insurance company that they alleged served the British branch of Israeli defense company Elbit Systems.
Analysts believe that this arrest has sparked a new debate about freedom of expression and the application of terrorism laws in the UK.
