Shaheed Sharif Osman Hadi, convener of the Inqilab Mancha and pioneer of the July Revolution, was laid to rest next to the grave of national and rebel poet Kazi Nazrul Islam at the central mosque premises of Dhaka University.
Relatives, fellow soldiers, and fans bid him farewell for the last time before his burial on Saturday afternoon. The entire compound was filled with grief and tears.
Earlier, after the funeral held at the South Plaza of the National Parliament Building, Hadi’s body was brought to Dhaka University. Before the funeral, an autopsy was conducted at the Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital in the capital, said the doctors concerned.
Osman Hadi died while undergoing treatment at Singapore General Hospital last Thursday. He was seriously injured in the head when he was shot by miscreants on his way back from a public meeting in Bijoynagar area on December 12. Despite multiple stages of treatment in Dhaka and Singapore, he could not be saved in the end.
The death of Osman Hadi has cast a shadow of deep mourning over the country’s political and social arena. Although his burial marks the end of a chapter, his ideals and struggle will remain in memory and in the movement, according to supporters.
