Dhaka—BNP Standing Committee member Mirza Abbas has called the attack on Sharif Osman Hadi, an independent candidate for Dhaka-8 constituency, a planned attack against democratic rights and state independence.
He alleged that the mob situation that arose when he went to see Hadi at Dhaka Medical College Hospital after the attack was aimed at ensuring Hadi’s death.
Speaking at a protest rally in Nayapaltan on Saturday, Mirza Abbas said there had been signs of provocative preparations hours before the attack. He claimed that those who created chaos at the hospital were not Hadi supporters but were affiliated with a “particular political party.”
Referring to Hadi as his equal candidate, he said that the attack had deeply hurt him personally. At the same time, he warned, “The black hand of this evil force must be broken.”
Other BNP leaders at the rally also demanded the immediate arrest of the attackers and ensuring a fair and safe electoral environment.
