Police have arrested Ayesha, the main suspect in the brutal murder of a mother and daughter in the capital’s Mohammadpur, from Jhalakathi’s Nalchhiti. The bodies of Laila Afroz (48) and her daughter Nafisa Lawal Binte Aziz (15) were found in a flat on Shahjahan Road on Monday morning – both of them with numerous marks of deep wounds.
Jewel Rana, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police of Tejgaon Division, said that Ayesha was hiding in her grandfather-in-law’s house after the murder. A special team conducted a raid under direct supervision and arrested her.
Ayesha, who had joined the house just four days ago, had been suspected from the start. CCTV footage shows her entering the house at 7:51 a.m. and leaving the house at 9:35 a.m., shortly after the murder, wearing the deceased Nafisa’s school uniform and carrying a bag.
Investigators say the murder was “unusually brutal”—something that would not normally be possible without a trained killer or a violent rage—after seeing nearly 30 injury marks on Laila Afroz’s body and six on Nafisa’s.
Her husband, AJM Azizul Islam, was at work at the time of the incident. Nafisa was a ninth-grade student. Police say that more information about the motive and plan of the murder may be obtained by questioning Ayesha.
