The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has decided to investigate allegations that the state spent around Tk 240 million on beautification and infrastructure work at former President Md. Abdul Hamid’s private residence. The agency says the expenditure was “irrational” and a misuse of state funds for “personal gain.”
On Sunday, ACC Director General (Prevention) Md. Akhter Hossain told reporters,
“The ACC is not considerate of anyone’s rank; the truth and objectivity of the allegations are our only criteria.”
According to the complaint, the huge amount was spent on beautification, decoration and construction of various infrastructure around the former president’s personal three-storey duplex house located at Plot No. 6, Lake Drive Road, Nikunja-1 area of the capital. Abdul Hamid started living in this house with his family after completing his duties as president.
ACC officials said initial information about “abnormal spending” and “interferential irregularities” involving government funds surrounding the house had been received. These allegations influenced the ACC to reach a decision to launch a formal investigation.
Once the investigation begins, all aspects including the nature of state expenditure, the approval process, and the legality of the use of allocations will be examined, said those concerned.
