A powerful 7.0-magnitude earthquake was felt in a remote area near the border of the United States and Canada on Saturday afternoon local time.
The epicenter of the earthquake was about 230 kilometers northwest of the city of Juneau, Alaska, and 250 kilometers west of Whitehorse, the capital of the Yukon province of Canada, the US Geological Survey (USGS) said. The tremor was strong because it occurred at a depth of only 10 kilometers below the surface.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police’s Whitehorse branch said many people felt the tremors, but there were no initial reports of casualties or damage. Local residents shared their experiences on social media. Authorities confirmed there was no threat of a tsunami.
Damage is expected to be limited as the earthquake struck in an uninhabited area near the border. However, relevant emergency departments are monitoring the situation.
