The 2026 FIFA World Cup is the largest ever—12 groups, 48 teams, three host nations (the United States, Canada, and Mexico). Nearly a quarter of FIFA’s member nations are participating in the biggest tournament in world football, many for the first time.
The long-awaited draw took place at midnight on Friday, where the group opponents of strong teams including Brazil, Argentina, Germany, England were finalized. The ‘pots’ were divided according to FIFA rankings, previous tournament performance and the host country, so that the big teams do not face each other in too short a time.
Fans’ reactions are mixed:
— Brazil and Argentina’s group is satisfactory
— Germany is uneasy, as many believe “it will be difficult to get out of the group stage this time”
— England’s group is a source of concern among analysts in the country
— and most football experts see Spain as the ‘hot favourites of the tournament’
In the new format,
the top 24 teams from 12 groups will advance directly to the second round. The remaining 8 best third-placed teams will join them for a total of 32 teams in the knockout phase.
