A moderate earthquake was felt in the capital Dhaka and surrounding districts on Thursday morning. The Meteorological Department said the magnitude of the tremor, which occurred at around 6:15 am local time, was 4.1. The epicenter was in Shibpur area of Narsingdi.
There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.
The European Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC) said the earthquake had a depth of 27-30 kilometers and its epicenter was about 33 kilometers north-northeast of Tongi.
Sudden tremors woke many people in several districts including Dhaka, Narayanganj, Gopalganj, and Lakshmipur in the morning. Many people reported experiencing the tremors on social media.
Several earthquakes in the past few weeks have prompted experts to warn of the risk of major tremors, and to recommend urgent repairs to old and vulnerable buildings.
