Dr. Shafiqur Rahman took charge as the Ameer of Jamaat-e-Islami for the third consecutive term of 2026-28. He took the oath at the Al-Falah Auditorium in the capital’s Moghbazar on Friday evening. Leaders of various political parties and central leaders of Jamaat were present at the ceremony.
After assuming office, he said, “I do not consider myself qualified, but I will fulfill the assigned responsibilities collectively. If I make a mistake, the responsibility lies with me.” He also pledged to work in the interest of the country and the people.
Referring to the 16-year long political repression, he said, “Prison was our first home; we endured it by protesting injustice.”
Shafiqur Rahman was elected as Amir for the first two terms in 2019 and 2022. Previously, only Ghulam Azam and Matiur Rahman Nizami had served in this position for three consecutive terms.
According to the constitution, the members of the party’s national council elect the emir for a three-year term through a secret ballot.
