Cracks have been detected in six stations of the Dhaka Metro Rail following the earthquake that struck the capital on Friday (21 November). The affected stations include Karwan Bazar, Bijoy Sarani, Pallabi, Mirpur-10, Mirpur-11 and Farmgate.
Cracks were spotted on the floor of the electrical substation rooms at Karwan Bazar and Bijoy Sarani stations. The entrance wall of the substation at Bijoy Sarani also showed visible cracks. At Pallabi station, cracks were found in the walls of both the electrical substation and the control room. The substation floor at Mirpur-11 station and several tiles at Mirpur-10 station were also reported damaged. In Farmgate station, cracks appeared on the inside walls of the lift core.
Muhammad Faozul Kabir Khan, adviser to the Ministry of Road Transport and Bridges, said the cracks are not severe. Inspection and assessments are underway. The metro rail service is operating because no safety risks were detected after the trial run. Following the earthquake, security measures across all stations have been further strengthened.
