A pedestrian was killed after a private car veered off the Chattogram Elevated Expressway and crashed onto the road below in the city’s Bandar area on Thursday afternoon. Four passengers inside the vehicle were also injured.
Police identified the victim as Shafique, 55, a port worker and resident of the neighborhood.
Sirajul Islam, investigation officer of Bandar Police Station, said the car was traveling from Patenga Seabeach toward the city when it suddenly toppled off the expressway. Shafique was cycling beneath the structure when the falling vehicle struck him. He was rushed to a hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead.
According to police, three men and one woman were inside the vehicle. All four were injured and are being treated at Agrabad Islami Bank Hospital. Officers suspect the car was speeding and breached the guardrail before falling onto the road.
The crash occurred close to the police station. Investigators say the driver likely lost control while taking a turn at high speed. The expressway’s maximum speed limit is 60 km/h, with the Chattogram Development Authority instructing drivers to slow to 40 km/h on curves.
Because traffic is often light on the expressway, many drivers tend to speed, police noted. Earlier, two motorcyclists were killed in separate accidents on the same roadway.
