The government has taken a policy decision to establish a new public university, ‘Dhaka Central University,’ by merging seven government colleges in the capital.
The Ministry of Education says the move aims to ensure quality education, timely examinations, faster results, and administrative efficiency.
According to the Ministry of Secondary and Higher Education, the colleges—Dhaka College, Eden Mohila College, Begum Badrunnesa Government Women’s College, Shaheed Suhrawardy College, Kabi Nazrul Government College, Mirpur Bangla College, and Titumir Government College—will now be part of the new university, and their affiliation with Dhaka University will be revoked.
A draft of the “Dhaka Central University Ordinance 2025” has been prepared, and feedback was sought from students, teachers, academics, and civil society. Interim administration has been appointed to manage academic and administrative activities for the 2024–25 academic year.
The Ministry emphasized safeguarding faculty positions, preserving the colleges’ identities, and ensuring student rights. The ordinance will be finalized gradually through a structured process to ensure broad acceptance.
