Bangladesh maintained full control of the Sylhet Test against Ireland from the second day onward, declaring their innings at 587 for 8 and solidifying their dominance.
It was a day of records for the Tigers. For the first time in Bangladesh’s Test history, the top four batters all scored fifties. Opener Mahmudul Hasan Joy led the charge with a magnificent 171, while Shadman Islam made 80, Mominul Haque scored 82, and Najmul Hossain Shanto hit a solid 100 before being dismissed right after reaching his century.
With these performances, Bangladesh set a new record for their highest total on home soil (587 runs), surpassing their previous best of 560 against Zimbabwe in 2020.
However, two more records slipped away — the chance to reach 600 runs for the first time at home and to break their all-time highest total of 638 (Galle, 2013) — as Bangladesh opted to declare the innings.
Overall, this Sylhet innings now stands as Bangladesh’s third-highest total in Test history. Their second-best remains 595 for 8 declared against New Zealand in Wellington in 2017.
Earlier, Ireland were bowled out for 286 in their first innings, giving Bangladesh a commanding 301-run lead — setting up a strong platform for victory.
