A fire broke out at the central office of the banned Awami League on Shaheed Abrar Fahad Avenue in Gulistan, Dhaka, on Thursday (November 13) around 1 p.m.
According to reports, a group of 10 to 15 people gathered in front of the party office to prevent the banned Awami League’s announced “lockdown” program. During their protest, a fire suddenly erupted inside the building.
Witnesses said that after the flames initially subsided, the agitators set the building on fire again.
It is worth noting that on August 5 last year, following the fall of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, angry protesters vandalized and set fire to this same Awami League office. The building had since remained abandoned for months.
Meanwhile, ahead of the verdict date in the crimes against humanity case against Sheikh Hasina and two others — related to the July mass uprising — security has been tightened across Dhaka and the entire country.
At the same time, leaders and activists from the BNP, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, NCP, and several other political parties took to the streets to resist any attempts by the banned Awami League to reorganize or hold programs.
