Following four cocktail explosions at different locations in Dhaka on Monday (10 November), the interim government has tightened security at all religious institutions. The government stated that any attempt to disrupt religious coexistence or communal harmony would be strictly dealt with.
According to police, two explosions occurred inside and outside the premises of ‘Probotona’, the offices of Fisheries and Livestock Adviser Farida Akhter and writer Farhad Mozhar, in Mohammadpur. Another explosion took place in front of the main branch of Grameen Bank in Mirpur, while two more incidents occurred on the main road at Dhanmondi-27 near Midas Center and in front of Ibn Sina Hospital at Dhanmondi-9. Fortunately, no casualties were reported.
In connection with the incidents, the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) arrested a 28-year-old youth, who was identified as a member of the banned Chhatra League. The suspect is being interrogated regarding the explosions at St. Mary’s Cathedral and St. Joseph School premises in Kakrail, among other locations.
The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and DMP are conducting joint operations across the city to apprehend all involved in these acts of violence. Meanwhile, the government has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring the safety of all churches and religious establishments in the capital and to protecting religious coexistence and communal harmony.
