The Saudi government has announced that individuals suffering from serious or incurable diseases will not be permitted to perform Hajj. It has also requested all Hajj-sending countries to ensure that every pilgrim undergoes a complete medical examination and is certified as physically fit for the pilgrimage.
According to a statement released by Bangladesh’s Ministry of Religious Affairs on Monday (November 10), the Saudi Ministry of Hajj and Umrah has sent an official letter outlining the health conditions that disqualify a person from performing Hajj.
The letter specifies that individuals with major organ failure—such as those undergoing kidney dialysis, suffering from severe heart disease, dependent on continuous oxygen support, or having advanced liver cirrhosis—will not be allowed to perform Hajj.
In addition, those with severe neurological or psychiatric disorders, memory loss, extreme old age, late-stage pregnancies, or high-risk pregnancies will also be barred.
People suffering from infectious diseases like tuberculosis, viral hemorrhagic fevers, or cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy or intensive immunotherapy are likewise prohibited from participating.
Saudi authorities have instructed Hajj agencies to issue valid health certificates confirming that each pilgrim is medically fit and upload them to the Nusuk Masar digital platform. A monitoring team will verify the authenticity of these certificates. If any violations are found, corrective and disciplinary measures will be taken against the respective country.
Dr. A. F. M. Khalid Hossain, Adviser for Religious Affairs, stated, “Physical fitness is crucial for ensuring a safe and smooth Hajj. The Saudi health regulations will be strictly followed for pilgrims from Bangladesh.”
Earlier, the Ministry of Religious Affairs had already advised against registering individuals with serious illnesses for Hajj and issued directives to Hajj agencies. Two Bangladeshi physicians are currently attending a workshop in Saudi Arabia to review and discuss the health requirements in detail.
