BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said that there is no possibility of holding a referendum before the upcoming national election. He alleged that the ongoing political crisis was created by the interim government and urged them not to deceive the nation with lies.
He made these remarks on Saturday (November 1) while addressing a discussion meeting organized by the Muktijoddha Dal at the National Press Club.
Mirza Fakhrul said, “A certain quarter is deliberately trying to erase the memory of 1971, but they will not succeed, because 1971 is the very foundation of our existence. The anti-liberation forces are still conspiring—they once called the Liberation War a ‘conflict,’ and the nation has not forgotten that.”
He further stated, “If elections had been held within three months of the coup, the evil forces would not have dared to rise again. Our 31-point proposal clearly outlines the framework for necessary reforms. We stand firmly for reform. Saying that elections cannot be held without proportional representation (PR) is simply a way to fool the people.”
The BNP secretary general claimed that the party would resist all conspiracies and reestablish democracy in the country. “We are conducting our movement peacefully. We have not surrounded the Chief Adviser’s residence or the Election Commission office. Yet one particular party is trying to impose its will on everyone,” he added.
Mirza Fakhrul said the country is going through a critical time: “A referendum was not necessary, yet we agreed to it. Now they want to hold the referendum before the election. They have expressed fears of possible attacks around the election but have failed to specify who might carry them out.”
Referring to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s recent media interviews, he said, “Sheikh Hasina is giving interviews to various media outlets from India, which makes it seem like she has fled the country. We urge the Indian government to send her back—she must face justice.
