BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has accused the interim government of betraying the people’s trust. He said the government has failed to uphold the confidence that political parties had placed in it.
He made the remarks on Friday (October 31) at a discussion meeting organized at the National Press Club marking the 53rd founding anniversary of the Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD). The discussion was titled “Establishing Democracy Through Anti-Fascist Partnership.”
Mirza Fakhrul said the Consensus Commission’s recommendation to hold a referendum before the upcoming national election under the July Charter is “unrealistic and unacceptable.” He asserted that there is no scope for a referendum before the election.
The BNP Secretary General blamed the interim government for the current political crisis, saying that despite nearly a year of discussions and agreements, the government has failed to honor its commitments, shattering the trust of the people.
He added, “After the Chief Adviser’s announcement, the people of the country want an election in February, but a certain quarter is trying to obstruct it.”
Mirza Fakhrul further claimed that the propaganda suggesting BNP opposes reform is false and aimed at misleading the public. He reiterated that the BNP seeks a free, fair, and credible election.
He also urged that even those who opposed the Liberation War in 1971 should not stand in the way of the people’s demand for a fair election.
At the event, he further alleged that it is not the political parties but the Consensus Commission itself that is creating confusion regarding the referendum, thereby hindering the democratic process.
