In a shocking escalation of violence, Sudan’s paramilitary force, the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), has carried out a mass killing in the western Darfur capital, El-Fasher, leaving at least 1,500 people dead within just three days. The report was published on Wednesday (October 29) by Al Jazeera.
According to the Sudan Doctors Network, RSF fighters captured El-Fasher from the national army earlier this week. As civilians tried to flee the city, RSF forces opened fire indiscriminately, resulting in what the group described as a “true genocide.”
Observers monitoring Sudan’s civil war say this atrocity is part of a continuing pattern of violence. Over the past year and a half, RSF attacks through bombings, starvation tactics, and extrajudicial killings have already claimed around 14,000 lives in the region.
Since 2023, the ongoing civil war between Sudan’s army and the RSF has left thousands dead and displaced nearly 12 million people. El-Fasher was the last major city under army control in Darfur.
After a 17-month siege, RSF forces finally captured the city last Sunday, and between Sunday and Wednesday, around 2,000 people were reportedly killed, according to Sudanese government sources.
Analysts warn that the latest massacre signals a deepening humanitarian catastrophe in Darfur, calling for urgent international intervention to prevent further bloodshed.
