A local Hindu leader and municipality ward member was brutally assaulted and left unconscious on the street by a group of religious extremists in Narsingdi Sadar Upazila. The victim, who sustained severe orthopedic injuries, is currently undergoing treatment at Narshingdi Sadar Hospital. Police have launched a probe into the incident but have yet to make any arrests.
The incident occurred on Friday (December 19) in the Middle Kanda Para area under Narsingdi Municipality.
According to the victim and local eyewitnesses, a group of masked miscreants, led by local extremists Mahfuzul Bhuiyan and Maulana Oliullah, ambushed Tarok Saha Roy. The attackers chased the elderly ward member through the street, screaming highly derogatory communal slurs, “Catch that Malaun! He is the father of that pig who attacked our mosque!” The armed mob cornered the victim and began beating him mercilessly with hockey sticks and wooden clubs, targeting his thighs, back, and shoulders. Eyewitnesses stated that although Mr. Roy screamed desperately for help, no residents dared to intervene out of intense fear of the influential Islamic extremist group. The assault continued until the victim collapsed and lost consciousness on the road, after which the attackers fled the scene.
Later, some residents rescued the unconscious victim and rushed him to the Narsingdi Sadar Hospital, where he has been admitted for the last few hours due to his critical condition.
Speaking from his hospital bed, the victim stated that the brutal ambush was a direct act of revenge. He added that his son had previously been targeted during the Durga Puja festival, and the attackers held a deep-seated political and religious grudge against his family.
When contacted, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Narsingdi Police Station stated, “We are very sorry for what happened. However, no written complaint has been formally lodged with the station yet. Once a written complaint is filed by the family, we will immediately take strict legal action against perpetrators.”
