Central Bank Issues Warning Over Fake Currency Rumors

Staff Correspondent »

  • The Bangladesh Bank has expressed concern over rumors circulating on social media claiming that a large amount of counterfeit currency is circulating in the country. In a statement issued on Wednesday (October 15) by the Communications and Publications Division of the bank, it was noted that such misinformation can create fear and unrest among the public.

The statement emphasized that producing, carrying, or transacting with counterfeit notes is completely illegal and punishable. The Bangladesh Bank, along with law enforcement agencies, is taking maximum precautions to prevent the circulation of fake currency and is regularly implementing effective measures.

To help the public identify and prevent fake notes, four guidelines were issued: check security features such as watermarks, security threads, uneven printing, color-shifting ink, and microtext when receiving notes; conduct large transactions through banking channels; use digital methods as much as possible for cash transactions; and report any suspicious notes or information immediately to nearby law enforcement or the emergency number 999.

The Bangladesh Bank is also running awareness campaigns under the slogan “Recognize Real Notes, Ensure Safe Transactions” and advises people to visit the bank’s website to learn more about the security features of genuine currency notes.
