This year’s Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded to Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado. The winner was announced on Friday (October 10) at 11 a.m. local time (3 p.m. Bangladesh time) from the Nobel Institute in Oslo, Norway.
In a post on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), the Nobel Committee stated that Machado received the award in recognition of her relentless efforts to establish democratic rights and freedom for the people of Venezuela.
Last year (2024), the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to Japan’s anti-nuclear weapons organization, Nihon Hidankyo. The organization was honored for its efforts to promote a world free of nuclear weapons and for highlighting the horrors of nuclear attacks through the testimonies of survivors.
The Nobel Committee’s announcement has sparked widespread celebrations across Venezuela. Machado, who has long fought for democracy and human rights, is now seen as a symbol of hope in Latin America.
