For the first time ever, Bangladesh has been elected as the President of the 43rd General Conference of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). On Tuesday (October 7), during the session held in Paris, Khandker M. Talha, Bangladesh’s Permanent Representative to UNESCO, won the election, defeating the Japanese candidate.
In the 53-year history of Bangladesh’s membership at UNESCO, this marks the first time a Bangladeshi representative has been elected to this prestigious position — a significant milestone in the country’s diplomatic history.
According to a press release issued by the Ministry of Education’s Public Relations Officer Khalid Mahmud, Education Adviser Professor Dr. C. R. Abrar expressed deep joy and pride at this remarkable success and extended his heartfelt congratulations to the newly elected president.
In a statement, Dr. Abrar said, “Bangladesh’s election to the presidency of UNESCO’s General Conference is undoubtedly an extraordinary diplomatic achievement. It reflects not only Bangladesh’s national dignity but also its growing international credibility and leadership capability.”
He added, “By fostering cooperation and solidarity among the 195 member states, Bangladesh has established a stronger global presence. This victory will open new opportunities and horizons for the nation on the international stage.
