People from all walks of life paid their last respects to Language Movement veteran and free thinker Ahmad Rafique. On Saturday around 11 a.m., his body was taken to the Central Shaheed Minar, where a large number of people gathered to pay tribute. Later, through a mourning rally, his body was handed over to Ibrahim Medical College, as he had donated his body for medical education after death.
Ahmad Rafique passed away on Thursday night at 10:12 p.m. at BIRDEM Hospital in Dhaka at the age of 96. He had been on life support before his death.
During the 1952 Language Movement, Rafique actively maintained communication with students of Fazlul Haque Hall, Dhaka Hall, and Mitford, and was a regular participant in processions and rallies. In 1954, during the Dhaka Medical College student movement, he was the only one against whom an arrest warrant was issued.
Although he later obtained an MBBS degree, Rafique chose not to pursue a career as a physician. In keeping with his lifelong spirit of sacrifice and dedication, his decision to donate his body after death stands as an enduring example for future generations.
