Due to the influence of a deep depression over the Bay of Bengal, rainfall is continuing across the country. The Bangladesh Meteorological Department has forecast that moderate to heavy rain may persist for the next four days in different regions.
The depression is moving toward the Odisha and Andhra Pradesh coasts of India and may make landfall tonight. As a result, maritime ports in Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, Mongla, and Payra have been advised to hoist local cautionary signal number 3.
According to forecasts, rainfall is expected to intensify in Chattogram, Sylhet, and Dhaka on Friday and Saturday. Until October 6, heavy downpours are likely in many areas of Chattogram, Sylhet, Barishal, Khulna, Dhaka, and Mymensingh divisions.
Meteorologists explained that depressions gain energy from seawater and moisture. When they move onto land, this stored energy triggers heavier rainfall. Typically, such depressions form a rain belt spanning 300 to 400 kilometers, which continues to cause rainfall for several days after landfall.
Between Tuesday and Wednesday, Dhaka recorded 206 millimeters of rainfall, the highest in 24 hours this year. The downpour led to severe waterlogging in several parts of the capital, causing widespread public suffering.
Officials also noted that this year’s rainfall levels are higher compared to the past few years, as seasonal monsoon activity has become more intense.
