The United States government entered a shutdown on Wednesday after lawmakers failed to reach an agreement on the new fiscal year budget. Both Republicans and Democrats showed no willingness to compromise, leading to the halt of federal operations.
As a result, widespread layoffs of federal employees are expected within two days. Millions of citizens could face disruption of government services, and the economy risks losses amounting to billions of dollars.
At a White House briefing, Vice President J.D. Vance accused the Democrats of causing the shutdown. He claimed they want billions of dollars spent on healthcare for undocumented immigrants, which Republicans find unacceptable. Some progressive Democrats, however, have supported this stance.
Although Democrats are willing to consider a budget deal, they insisted on guarantees for healthcare funding before agreeing. Meanwhile, Republicans proposed a temporary “stop-gap” measure to keep government operations running at current funding levels until mid-November.
It is important to note that U.S. government agencies rely on Congress-approved annual funding. Without an agreement before the start of the new fiscal year, a shutdown automatically takes effect, disrupting essential services and government operations.
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer has accused Republicans of bullying to force their agenda. Without compromise between the two parties, the shutdown could be prolonged.
