Amid mounting protests over electricity and water shortages, Madagascar’s President Andry Rajoelina has dissolved his government. In a televised address on Monday (September 29), he admitted government failures and apologized to the people.
Rajoelina stated, “If the government has not fulfilled its responsibilities properly, we acknowledge that and express our regret.” He also promised support for businesses affected during the unrest and said he understood the anger and hardship caused by the crisis.
The protests, led by Generation Z activists, began last Thursday in the capital Antananarivo and soon spread to eight cities. Despite sacking the energy minister, the demonstrations intensified, with protesters demanding the resignation of the President and his entire cabinet.
As thousands again took to the streets, Rajoelina announced the dismissal of the prime minister and the dissolution of the government. He confirmed that applications for a new prime minister will be accepted within three days, after which a new cabinet will be formed.
According to the UN Human Rights Chief, at least 22 people have been killed and 100 injured in the unrest, with reports of rubber bullets, tear gas, beatings, and even live ammunition being used against demonstrators.
Analysts say this is the most serious challenge President Rajoelina has faced since being re-elected for a third term in 2023.
