At least four people were killed and eight others injured when a gunman opened fire during Sunday prayers at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Grand Blanc Township, Michigan.
Police said the attacker, identified as 40-year-old Thomas Jacob Sanford, drove a van into the church before indiscriminately firing shots and later setting the building on fire. Officers rushed to the scene within seconds and killed him in an exchange of gunfire about eight minutes later.
Flames and thick smoke continued to rise from the church for hours. Firefighters eventually brought the blaze under control, but authorities said more bodies could be recovered from the debris.
According to Police Chief William Renie, one of the eight wounded is in critical condition while the others remain stable. The motive behind the attack is still under investigation.
