At least 25 people were killed and more than 60 others injured after a liquefied natural gas (LPG) tanker truck exploded in Mexico City. The country’s Health Ministry confirmed the figures in a statement on Friday.
The accident occurred Thursday in Iztapalapa, one of the capital’s most densely populated areas, when the tanker—carrying about 50,000 liters of LPG—crashed into a boundary wall. The collision triggered a massive explosion, setting at least 30 nearby vehicles on fire.
According to the Health Ministry, 10 victims died on the spot, while the remaining 15 succumbed to their injuries in hospital. Among the injured, 21 remain hospitalized in critical condition, while 38 others have been discharged after treatment.
Preliminary investigations suggest the accident was caused by reckless driving and excessive speed.
