U.S. President Donald Trump has called on the European Union (EU) to impose up to 100 percent tariffs on China and India in order to pressure Russian President Vladimir Putin to stop the war in Ukraine.
On Tuesday (September 9), during a meeting between U.S. and EU officials to discuss alternatives for increasing economic pressure on Russia, Trump made the proposal, according to British media outlet BBC.
Trump stated that since China and India are the main buyers of Russian oil, putting pressure on them could deliver a major blow to Russia’s economy and potentially force Putin to end the war. He also mentioned that he would hold a phone conversation with Putin very soon.
It should be noted that last month the U.S. imposed a 50 percent tariff on Indian products, which included an additional 25 percent penalty for importing oil from Russia.
Analysts say that if the EU imposes such tariffs on China and India, it would mark a new phase in the strategy to isolate Russia. Until now, the EU has largely confined its measures to sanctions.
