Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) headquarters remained closed for 40 consecutive days due to protests demanding that BNP leader Ishraque Hossain be handed over the mayor’s responsibilities. During this time, many officials did not attend office even for a single day. Yet, records show that their allocated vehicles consumed 14–15 liters of fuel per day.
According to DSCC accounts, the corporation spends nearly Tk 50 million per month on fuel. An analysis of April, May, and June shows that in May and June — when the office was shut for 40 days — fuel consumption remained the same as in regular times, despite virtually no office activities taking place.
Even within the city corporation, questions are being raised — if the office was closed, where did all this fuel go? Experts argue that such activities are not only irregularities but outright corruption and wastage of state resources. They note this is a blatant example of the lack of transparency and accountability in a taxpayer-funded institution.
DSCC administrator Md. Shahjahan Mia told Prothom Alo, “If anyone issued fuel without attending office, that is absolutely wrong. If such incidents are found, they will be investigated.”
