Dhaka: Starting today (Thursday, September 4), gold is being sold at the highest price in Bangladesh’s history. The Bangladesh Jewellers Association (BAJUS) has increased the price by Tk 3,044 per bhori (11.664 grams), setting the new rate for 22-carat gold at Tk 178,832 per bhori.
In a notice issued on Wednesday night, BAJUS confirmed that the new price will take effect from Thursday. Earlier, on September 1, the price was raised by Tk 1,470 per bhori to Tk 175,788.
According to the new rates, 21-carat gold will cost Tk 170,703 per bhori, 18-carat gold Tk 146,313, and traditional gold Tk 121,166 per bhori.
So far this year, BAJUS has adjusted gold prices 49 times — increasing them 33 times and lowering them only 16 times. Last year, prices were revised 62 times, of which 35 were hikes.
Analysts note that volatile prices in the international market and pressure from the US dollar are driving repeated hikes in local gold prices, pushing this precious metal further out of reach for ordinary consumers.
