Dhaka: The Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) election, scheduled for September 9, is now set to proceed without legal obstacles as the Appellate Division has upheld the stay on the High Court’s earlier suspension order. The order was delivered on Wednesday (September 3) by a full Appellate Bench led by Chief Justice Syed Refat Ahmed.
Earlier, on September 1, a High Court bench comprising Justices Habibul Gani and Sheikh Tahsin Ali had suspended all election activities until October 30. Following this, the Vice-Chancellor of Dhaka University approached the Chamber Judge with a hand-written application seeking a stay of the High Court order. The Chamber Court approved the request, extending the stay on the High Court’s verdict.
Meanwhile, SM Forhad, the GS candidate nominated by the United Student Alliance, faced a legal challenge from BM Fahmida Alam, the secretary for Liberation War and Democratic Movements of the Left Alliance panel. The petition questioned Forhad’s candidacy, claiming he had been part of the Chhatra League committee before August 5, 2024, and therefore was ineligible to run on the Islami Chhatra Shibir panel.
This year, a total of 471 candidates will compete for 28 DUCSU posts. For the positions: 45 candidates for Vice President (VP), 19 for General Secretary (GS), 25 for Assistant General Secretary (AGS), and the highest competition is for the Member position with 217 candidates. The voting is scheduled for September 9.
