The European Union has announced €4 million (approximately 47 crore BDT) in funding to support Bangladesh’s 13th parliamentary elections in meeting international standards. Following a meeting with Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Habibul Awal on Tuesday, EU Ambassador Charles Whiteley emphasized their commitment to ensuring “an independent, competent, and accountable electoral process.” The aid aims to enhance transparency and public trust in the upcoming polls.
A six-member EU delegation outlined a multi-faceted assistance plan, including electoral reforms, voter education, and countering disinformation. Ambassador Whiteley revealed that a pre-election expert team will assess Bangladesh’s preparedness next month, followed by technical support for the Election Commission and capacity-building for local observer groups. The European Partnership for Democracy will collaborate as an implementing partner, focusing on citizen engagement and credible oversight mechanisms.
While labeling Bangladesh as a “priority country,” Whiteley clarified that a full-fledged EU observer mission depends on the preliminary assessment’s findings. He maintained that election scheduling remains the EC’s prerogative but stressed, “Our technical assistance will focus on enhancing acceptability.” The discussions also covered electoral law amendments and dialogues between the EC, caretaker government, and political stakeholders.
The EU delegation urged strengthened communication between all political actors to ensure a participatory environment. “Our goal isn’t just financial support but helping Bangladesh build an electoral system that earns global recognition,” Whiteley stated. Detailed implementation plans will be finalized in coming weeks, with particular attention to combating misinformation and empowering domestic observation networks—key factors for legitimizing the electoral outcome internationally.
