US Warns of Further Tariff Hikes on India

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has issued a stern warning that the 50% tariffs imposed on India could increase further. In a Wednesday interview with Bloomberg TV, Bessent stated, “If the situation doesn’t improve, additional tariffs or sanctions may be imposed.” This comes as President Donald Trump prepares for Friday talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska to discuss ending the Ukraine war, with outcomes potentially impacting India’s trade relations.

The warning coincides with high-stakes US-Russia negotiations, where India’s trade fate hangs in the balance. Bessent emphasized that decisions hinge on the Alaska summit’s results, with India Today reporting that failed talks could trigger a third round of tariffs. The US recently imposed 25% additional tariffs on Indian oil imports from Russia through an executive order, compounding existing 25% tariffs that collectively now stand at 50%.

A US delegation will visit India on August 25 for eleventh-hour trade negotiations, though Bessent labeled India “non-compliant” in Fox News remarks. The US insists India must first halt Russian oil purchases before substantive talks can begin. While Indian officials hope for a breakthrough, Washington’s stance remains uncompromising. The window for resolution is narrow – the new tariffs take effect just two days after the scheduled talks.

President Trump warned of “very serious consequences” if Putin refuses to end the Ukraine war during their Alaska meeting, as reported by CNN and Reuters. This geopolitical tension compounds India’s trade dilemma, with potential ripple effects across global markets. Observers note that while Putin remains silent, Trump’s escalating rhetoric signals turbulent days ahead for international trade dynamics involving India.
