Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman sentenced to death in murder case and has been absconding for 45 years, Major (retd) Mo. Dhaka Metropolitan Detective Branch (DB) has arrested Mozaffar Hossain.
He was arrested in the capital on Thursday (July 16th). This was confirmed by a DB source.
Ziaur Rahman was the sixth president of Bangladesh, former army chief and one of the sector commanders of the Liberation War. He was born on January 19, 1936, in Bagmara village of Gabtali upazila in Bogra. After the political transition on November 7, 1975, he came under the country’s state leadership and established the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) on September 1, 1978.
President Ziaur Rahman visited Chittagong on May 29, 1981. The next day on May 30th, he was killed by a group of rebel soldiers at the Chittagong Circuit House. After the murder, his body was secretly buried in a remote area of Rauzan in Chittagong. When the bodies were recovered three days later, the funeral was held in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar in the presence of lakhs of people. He was later buried in the National Assembly premises.
