Former Speaker of the National Assembly and former Acting President of Bangladesh Barrister Zamir Uddin Sarkar is no more. He breathed his last at 4:19 am on Sunday (July 12) while undergoing treatment at Bangladesh Specialized Hospital in Shyamoli, the capital. (Inna lillahi wa inna ilaihi rajiun)
Barrister Zamir Uddin Sarkar had been suffering from various complications related to old age for a long time. He was admitted to the hospital when his physical condition deteriorated. The night before his death, Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly, Barrister Kaiser Kamal, went to the hospital to inquire about his physical condition.
Zamir Uddin Sarkar was born on December 1, 1931, in Nayabari village of Tentulia upazila of Panchagarh district. In his long career as a lawyer and politician, he served as the Speaker of the National Assembly for two terms. He also served as the Acting President in the constitutional succession of the country. He was well known in the political arena for his experience in conducting parliamentary activities and fulfilling constitutional duties.
His death has cast a shadow of grief over the country’s political arena. Various political leaders, colleagues and well-wishers have expressed deep grief, remembering his contributions.
