The flood situation in the country has deteriorated further due to heavy rains and upheaval hills. According to the latest bulletin of the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre, the waters of the five major rivers of the country are flowing over the danger line at nine points. At the same time, Chittagong, Cox’s Bazar, Mongla and Payra seaports have been asked to show local alert number three due to the high sea.
Rivers above the danger level
According to official data, the water of the Sangu River is flowing over 95 cm at Bandarban Point and 23 cm at Dohazari Point.
The water of the Matamuhuri river flows over 47 cm at Lama Point and 32cm at Chiringa point in Cox’s Bazar.
The situation in the Sylhet region is also alarming. The water of the Kushiara River flows over 18cm at Markuli Point in Sunamganj and 10cm at Fenchuganj point in Sylhet.
Besides, the water of the Manu River is flowing over 35cm at Manu Rail Bridge Point in Moulvibazar and 80 cm at Moulvibazar Point. The water of the Khoi River is above 60cm above the danger level at Balla Point in Habiganj.
A few more rivers near the border
The flood forecasting centre said the waters of the Teesta, Surma and Someshwari rivers are also very close to the alert. Seventy-seven of the country’s 127 water monitoring centres have seen a rise in water, which is likely to make the flood situation more complicated in the coming days.
Heavy rain continued
In the last 24 hours, 109 millimetres of rain has been recorded in Cherrapunji, India, and a maximum of 203 millimetres of rain in Chittagong, Bangladesh. According to meteorologists, the water level of the river may rise further due to the inundation of upstreams and continued rainfall.
Warnings at the Sea
Chittagong, Cox’s Bazar, Mongla and Payra seaports have been asked to show local alert number three due to the high sea and hostile weather. The concerned authorities have been directed to take necessary precautions.
